CD: Classical review: Brahms: Horn Trio Op 40; Violin Sonata Op 78; Fantasies Op 116, Faust/ Van der Zwart/ Melnikov

Though period-instrument recordings of earlier 19th-century chamber music are moderately familiar these days, I'm not sure that whatever of these works by Brahms have been performed in such a direction on disk before. Isabelle Faust plays a Stradivarius with gut strings, Alexander Melnikov a restored Bsendorfer piano made in 1875, and, most interestingly of all, Teunis van der Zwart uses a natural horn from 1845. Though the Horn Trio is almost constantly heard these days with a valve horn, Brahms composed the work specifically for the older, valveless instrument, and its darker, smokier reasoned certainly melds perfectly with the mellow Bsendorfer and the soft-grained string tone. Van der Zwart's supreme agility makes the added technical challenges of victimization that legal instrument hardly relevant, and the whole performance has a lightness of touch and an gymnastic exuberance that are completely convincing. Faust and Melnikov's quietly colloquial account of the G major Violin Sonata is impressive likewise, but Melnikov is less authoritative in the septenary Fantasies of Op 116, when the music demands forthrightness as well as intimacy.

Rocker Jackson Browne sues McCain over a song

LOS ANGELES () - Rock star Jackson Browne has sued U.S. presidential candidate John McCain for copyright infringement, accusing the presumptive Republican nominee of using the singer's 1977 hit "Running on Empty" in a campaign ad without permission.

The suit, filed on Thursday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, likewise names the Republican National Committee and the Ohio Republican Party as defendants. It seeks a permanent injunction against further utilization of Browne's music and at least $75,000 in indemnification.

The campaign position mocks McCain's Democratic rival for the White House, Barack Obama, for suggesting the land conserve gasoline through proper tire inflation, with Browne's most illustrious song, "Running on Empty," playing in the background.

The suit claims use of the sung without Browne's permission is a copyright violation and a breach of the U.S. Lanham Act by falsely implying Browne is associated with and endorses McCain's bid for president.

It also says use of Browne's voice in the ad violates the performer's so-called right of publicity under California law.

Browne's attorney, Lawrence Iser, said his client is "a well-known, lifelong liberal activist and supporter of Democratic candidates, and utilization of his song and his voice in a commercial bashing Barack Obama is anathema to Jackson."

A spokesman for McCain's campaign, Brian Rogers, said the Arizona senator was wrongly singled out as a target of the lawsuit because the ad in question was the sole work of the Ohio Republican Party.

"We had aught to do with the creation or distribution of this ad whatsoever," Rogers told . "Mr. McCain's name should quite simply be removed from this cause immediately."

Michael Johns' Mustache Dreams

All of the American Idol finalists change their look over the course of the competition, but the newest look belongs to Michael Johns, who is growing a mustache these days.

Im bringing it back, the singer tells OK! of his look. What the ascot didnt do for me Im sure the 'stache will. I just go with the flow and the flow said 'grow a mustache,' so I did.

Not everyone loves it though. I think you look better without it, Kristy Lee Cook tells him. You look like a serial killer.

Idol big-wigs arent too fond of the look either.

Theyve tried to get me to shave this but come on, it works, Michael says. I grabbed the new cover of Rolling Stone and Chris Martins got a 'stache. Im like if its working for Coldplay

Check out Michael and his 'stache in all ilts glory on the American Idols Live! Tour, kicking off July 1, this summer.

Britney entourage in paparazzi brawl

Britney Spears can't get a moment's peace. Within minutes of returning to Los Angeles, she and her bodyguards were already fighting with paparazzi.

The singer had been visiting her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, who gave birth on Wednesday to a baby girl. Soon after her flight from Mississippi landed at Los Angeles International Aiport on Friday evening, Britney was swarmed with photographers.

Airport police described between 30 and 35 photographers launching themselves at her vehicle, according to the Associated Press. One of the singer's bodyguards finally pushed a paparazzo back, shoving the camera into his face.

The snapper was not pleased, complaining to airport police that the smack had left a slight mark on his cheek. He did not, however, file charges.

Police say that Spears, 26, was unharmed and left the airport safely.

Battalions of photographers doubtless followed, preparing for future skirmishes and armed with flashbulbs, memory cards and their best "Hey, Britney!" yells. And one sorry fellow nursing his poor, bruised cheek.

Pharrell Williams - Williams Plans Innovative Tattoo Removal

N.E.R.D. star PHARRELL WILLIAMS is planning on spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a new treatment to remove his many tattoos.

The rapper-turned-producer is sick of the body art he has on his arms and has signed up to a undergo a new method of erasing them - which involves scientists growing skin grafts in a lab.

Williams insists he doesn't care how expensive and painful the procedure will be - as long as it gets rid of the tattoos.

He says, "It's going to be pricey, but f**k it, it's worth it. I got fire on my arms! I'm a grown man!

"There's an institute called the Wake Forest Institute in North Carolina for Regenerative Skin Treatment. It's basically like getting a skin graft, but you're not taking skin from your ass or your legs. These guys actually grow the skin for you.

"First you have to give them a sample of your skin, which they then replicate. Once that's been done, they sew it on - and it's seamless."

But Williams is already plotting replacement tattoos.

He adds, "When it has healed you can go get whatever tattoo you want."
